Operations Lead / Coordinator

Organise and run a summer residential programme for smart, curious, and ambitiously altruistic 16-18 year olds to help them explore how they can best save lives, help others, or change the course of history.

Key details:

  • Pay: £1800. Food, accommodation, travel etc are provided. Possibility of additional paid work before or after (£15-30 p/h)

  • Time requirements: One week-long programme, including evenings. 5-30 hours of required virtual work in the run-up. Possibility of additional paid work, up to ~full-time

  • Location & dates: Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, UK (18th-27th August, 2023)

  • Only open to people normally resident in the UK with the right to work in the UK

Applications are now closed, though we’re still interested in receiving expressions of interest in Facilitators and Counsellors, and are actively looking for additional mentors.

Leaf is an independent nonprofit that supports exceptional teenagers. We are seeking staff for our Changemakers’ Fellowship, an 8-day residential with follow-up mentorship support.

The participants in Leaf’s last residential were fantastic. For example, 36% achieved all grade 9s at GCSE, compared to 0.6% of the UK.

They were also diverse: 66% selected an ethnicity other than white, which compares to 14% of the UK and 24% of the effective altruism community, and 46% were female, which compares to 29% of EA.

We select participants for intelligence, curiosity, and altruistic intent. Most are not yet familiar with effective altruism or longtermism.

We have already received 650 valid new applications for our Summer programme. Combined with some of the participants in our online programmes from earlier this year, plus some returnees from last year, we expect to gather a very promising cohort together.

How you will make a difference

How well the programme is organised will affect participants’ willingness to keep engaging with relevant ideas and to recommend the programme to potential future applicants — two key requirements for Leaf’s success!

During the residential itself you will:

  • Ensure that the needs of participants and staff are met, e.g.:

    • Water and snacks easily accessible

    • A room set up to enable co-working

    • COVID tests taken regularly

    • Issues dealt with as they arise, e.g. organising fans if rooms are too hot, dongles if Wifi access is poor, laptop hire if a device breaks, adapters for AV, travel home or alternative accommodation for sick participants, etc

  • Proactively take steps to improve to experience of participants and staff

  • Manage day trips and transport, e.g. where and when participants should meet

  • Maintain communications with relevant stakeholders and contractors, e.g. staff at the venue, transport companies, food & entertainment providers, insurance

  • Maintain clear records of costs and requirements

  • Managing staff or participant reimbursements for payments

  • Coordinate closely with the Safeguarding Lead to ensure that participants are safe

  • Be on-hand to deal with any other organisational or operational needs that arise

Before the residential you will:

  • Attend the staff onboarding on the 18th August

  • At a minimum, be onboarded into existing Leaf systems and apprised of arrangements (5-30 hours)

  • There is also opportunity for you to take on additional paid work in helping to organise various aspects of the programme, e.g.:

    • Arranging evening entertainment and meals in advance (~30 hours)

    • Inviting, scheduling, and answering queries for external speakers (~15 hours)

    • Managing consent forms and ensuring completion of onboarding steps for participants, parents, staff, and guests (~10 hours)

    • Organising name tags and/or t-shirts, gym facilities, COVID contingency planning, insurance, etc (~15 hours)

    • Online community management and optimisation (~10 hours)

    • Exploring whether Leaf should get set up as an independent company or charity, get fiscal sponsorship, etc, then running the application process (??? hours)

    • (Payment likely to be £15-30 per hour, depending on experience and need.)

There is the possibility of ongoing paid work, either on an hourly or indefinite contract basis, e.g. for setting up subsequent programmes — we are likely to organise a weekend-long programme for October half term, and may organise further online or in-person programmes in 2023-4.
